Do you review your staffs performance - why bother

Most people think they do a good job, even if they don’t!

So if everyone thinks they are doing a good job what happens when you do a review of staffs performance?

The ones who are doing a good job just get told they are doing a good job, which is what they expected to be told anyway.

The ones who are doing a crap job expected to be told they are doing a good job, so they then feel demoralised. So over the next few weeks moral drops, people mope round and then some people resign.

People then feel they should divide into camps, the good review camp and the bad one. The bad camp feeling jealous of the good one.

Doug has never done reviews…..just shouts and sometimes buys pizza:)

Can’t get a job - don’t worry

Herbert A. Millington
Chair - Search Committee
412A Clarkson Hall, Whitson University
College Hill, MA 34109

Dear Professor Millington,

Thank you for your letter of March 16. After careful consideration, I
regret to inform you that I am unable to accept your refusal to offer me
an assistant professor position in your department.

This year I have been particularly fortunate in receiving an unusually
large number of rejection letters. With such a varied and promising field
of candidates, it is impossible for me to accept all refusals.

Despite Whitson's outstanding qualifications and previous experience in
rejecting applicants, I find that your rejection does not meet my needs at
this time. Therefore, I will assume the position of assistant professor
in your department this August. I look forward to seeing you then.

Best of luck in rejecting future applicants.

Sincerely,
Chris L. Jensen
Thanks

Win a 3 night break in Paris, France

We are giving a prize away, here is the competition from the Sunday Times today:

Sunday Times Where Was I? competition
The competition starts on Sunday and ends on Wednesday

Read the article below and answer the questions at the end of the text. Clues to the answers can be found within the text:

Drive west to the station and catch a train along the coast. Alight at a small town to visit its castle. That was the plan until I arrived in this village – birthplace, in 1887, of a poet who wrote under a pseudonym. He was killed in battle in 1917 – from the trenches, he submitted The Hero, a competition-winning poem. His gravestone records him as “the chief poet”; a film of his life was made in 1992.

Checking my map, I notice something I had quite forgotten: “Roman practice work”, two miles north-northeast. A touch north, “Roman fort”; adjacent to that, “Roman amphitheatre”; and, a tad beyond, “Roman road”. Roman history plus puzzle compiler equals diversion, so I turn right. Rome, it seems, lies a splash away from a lake that, for sure, was not there during Roman times. I park, and soon lose myself in the tranquillity of the countryside. Once, it would have been far noisier, for the Roman activity here was military. The amphitheatre, therefore, was unusual in being part of it. I even find the site of the bathhouse and parade ground; and a motte, the foundation of a castle built some 950 years after the Romans left.

Much later, I am again station bound as I leave.

Nevertheless, I cannot help wondering what the Roman engineers would make of that lake; it once cooled a nuclear power station, entering service in 1965 (ceasing in 1991). The surrounding area was fashioned by a landscape architect (born 1901) – the first such to advise the Forestry Commission.

Six northwesterly miles later, I reach a second village, burial place of an archdeacon (born 1544). He translated the Book of Psalms that was added to a particular version of the Book of Common Prayer published in 1621. Meanwhile, I turn southwest. I am mindful, however, that on the river’s opposite bank is a station serving a preserved railway. Opened in 1836, and initially horse-drawn, the line closed 110 years later. It reopened in 1954. Oh: is that a corkscrew of steam I see pirouetting above the treetops? And is that a whistle I hear? No, I must drive on. I have a train to catch. And not that one.

The competition

1 What was the poet’s real name?

2 What is the name of the preserved railway?

Our new stuff - Online dating

Looks like we have got into the online dating business.

A while ago we bought a web site:

Easy Find a Date Free Online Dating

I know it looks horrible, but we do like horrible sites. This one is being made pretty though:)

It is a useful site and gets many free signups per day, but we are making it better.

We sort of left it after just sticking some links into and forgot about it and had adsense on it. Well at the A4UAwards someone said why not stick some affiliate links onto it, so on Friday we added them for some areas we were weak in.

I have spent the weekend looking around and found quite a few white label sites and lots of affiliate deals. So I looked at our traffic and basically decided we would target the main UK traffic with links to people like:

  • Match
  • Dating Direct
  • Loopy Love
  • UK Dating

We will rotate the ads round and see who pays us the most per visitor and after haggling with them we will pick one to get all the traffic.

For the rest of the world traffic and all the niches like gay dating, asian dating, christian dating etc we are going to use:

as a starter. We will see how it work, but interesting stats to start with. Thats a nice affiliate link, but we are using them, hence have no issue in putting it up.

Now we have a designer and techies off to build the site to compete with plentoffish and build a great free site:)

Doug looking at a horrible dating site.

New design for this blog…

Seeing how i’ve managed to keep this blog posting up and after this post by Chris Garret, i’ve decided to get proper design for this blog. Anyone who knows me what a nightmare i am when it comes to getting down to the details, so getting a web design i will be happy with is no easy task.

But here’s the first draft from the guys from xyz company, I’m supposed to study it and make suggestions, but thought i would see what other people thought first.

Thoughts please???
