Domain name parking is getting better - but domainers are still stupid
Buy every domain name you can possible think of the future is nigh. Following on from my post about how stupid domain people were. Well it appears there are some more companies now appearing who are developing sophisticated domain parking solutions, where a complete web site is hosted for you just by pointing your domain at them:
If you have lots of domain names or even just some have a look here:

.co.uk transfers go online
WOW
Looks like all those Americans can come and spend their lovely dollars now buying .co.uk domain names.
On 25 June the current registrant transfer process will become a paperless online version.
The old system relied on the completion of transfer forms and copies of suitable identification. The new system is based entirely online and can generally be completed in a matter of minutes.
This new online service will be launched on 25 June and will cost £10 plus VAT, a qualifying bulk transfer will also be charged at £10 plus VAT.
Britain.co.uk for sale - searchengine.co.uk too
Is the Uk domain market to take another leap forward this week? Shares and property is fallen in value, but domain prices have been rising dramatically in the past couple of years.
Edwin Hayward the guy behind memorabledomains is putting his domains up for public sale at InternetWorld in London. He has many great names including Britain.co.uk, Maps.co.uk, Mum.co.uk, Dad.co.uk, SearchEngine.co.uk and TechnicalSupport.co.uk
If anyone wants to meet the people behind the growth of the UK domain market they are meeting London this week. Unfortunately I can’t make it, but have fun everyone, but here are the details:

If your shares and property have fallen in value may be time to buy some domain names.

Domain speculating is about to die?
There are always a few scare stories floating around the Domain world, but this one looks as though it could be the real deal:
http://www.internetcommerce.org/Snowe_Bill_Threatens_Domain_Name_Registrants
At first glance, and going by the consumer-friendly “Anti-Phishing” law title you’d think this was nothing to worry about, but the proposed laws extend way beyond Phishing. Many people are concerned that in effect this legislation will add a whole new level of trademark infringement/UDRP legislation which has nothing to do with Phishing/Scam prevention but EVERYTHING to do with enabling big business to grab any domain they want from existing owners, on the most spurious of grounds and with the threat of massive financial penalties to back them up. Is this the end of this:

Various people on Forums have argued that this just an extra measure to rid the world of typo-squatters/cybersquatters, which is generally no bad thing BUT this doesn’t appear to be the case. What the Bill appears to allow is the wholesale trademarking of generic/dictionary terms which in turn then allows the TM holder to grab pre-existing domains that superficially resemble the TM term, even if the domain was registered before the tm. Unless you are prepared to and able to TM all your domains (at $350USD a time) then you could be heading for big trouble (with potential $6 million fines). Federal, State and Local authorities could also use the legislation in this way to obtain domains that they want.

If this is the case, this would allow corporations to circumvent existing trademark/UDRP processes and use this “Hammer” instead to pursue domain names that may only have limited relevance to them. Don’t think that just because you live outside the
If things are as bad as people are saying (and there a lot of serious domainers and industry bodies getting worried and involved so there may be something in it), then this could dramatically affect the domain name market – at the least it may make people very nervous and subdue purchases/prices.
It seems to be another example of ‘nasty’ legislation being snuck in under the guise of a ‘friendly’ law: We all want to stop/prevent Phishing and Fraud but the parts of the Act that we are talking about here have nothing to do with that. It could be that there’s an element if hype in all the furore so far, but if you have any interest in the domaining market then I urge you to find out more for yourself by using the link above and looking on the various Forums to see what the feedback is.

Those daft domain people
So I was a lucky and a clever person 5 to 10 years ago and I bought loads of good generic domain names, but not the great domains that can easily be sold. Recently there have been some great domain name sales but alas my domain names have not sold, so I park my domains at parking companies like sedo and make a pitance from my type in visitors.
For every dollar sedo get from google and yahoo, I get 50%. So for every 100 visitors I get as “type in” traffic only 5-10% of it ever clicks on those really bad adverts. Lets assume google are making $1 per visitor.
I have 100 visitors, 10 click on an advert, google make $10, sedo get $5, hence I get $2.50.
So 100 targetted visitors makes me $2.50 or 2.5 cents per visitor.
Why has no one come out with a clever domain parking system, it’s not that hard to do.
Let me point my quaility domain to your servers, then let me pick a template, pick some functions I want on the site, such as:
- news
- free articles
- a cms so I can add my own content
- ability to add adsense code
- ability to add in ebay and amazon feeds
- royalty free images
- contectual ads from comission junction
Now I have a system that allows me to build real sites, get links and make money. Ultimately making my domain much more interesting to a future buyer.
Why don’t the domain parking companes wish to do this?
They better watch out because 2 small scale players I know of are starting to do it. Check out:
